SELECTED HEALTH RISK FACTORS

A range of genetic, social, economic and environmental factors are recognised as increasing the risk of developing certain health conditions.

Updated results are provided for the following health risk factors:
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Tobacco smoking
  • Daily intake of fruit and vegetables
  • Measured high blood pressure.

Information about these selected health risk factors can be used along with other health and population characteristics to enable a better understanding of the overall health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These data can also be used to develop programmes aimed at improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and to predict future trends in a range of chronic diseases associated with these risk factors.
